Why is fire training important

A fire, of any type or size, should only be tackled with the correct equipment and more importantly the correct training. Using the wrong type of extinguisher, or the correct extinguisher but in the wrong way can be potentially fatal to the user.

From understanding the causes of fire and steps to take to prevent fires, having practical hands on fire training on the use of firefighting equipment, and to knowing your role in an evacuation procedure, there can be no substitute for fully accredited training scheme delivered by trainers who know first-hand the dangers involved in the workplace.

Although it is not a mandated requirement, it is always strongly recommended that staff have some sort of practical fire training in the use of fire extinguishers. Having all the correct extinguishers, serviced and installed in the correct place is really no use whatsoever if the people whose lives depend upon them do not know how to effectively use them.

Remember you should only use a fire extinguisher if it necessary to facilitate a safe exit from a building. Keep in mind, there maybe people left inside who will require that extinguisher for their escape! If you can get out without using a fire extinguisher do so; and remember to get out, stay out and raise the alarm.
