If you are not working in the hospitality industry, then you are probably getting ready to leave your desk for Christmas.

But when you lock that front door at the end of the working day, have you ensured that your business is protected against fire risks in your absence?

How to keep your business safe from fire during Christmas shutdown;

  • Ensure that any fire loading is removed from the business and put in bins, that are stored away from the property.
  • Turn off all electrical appliances, removing the plugs from the wall.
  • Complete a Fire alarm test on the day you are leaving the building, this will guarantee that the system is in full working order. Document any tests completed.
  • Make certain that a copy of all relevant fire safety documentation including but not limited to; the latest fire risk assessment, alarm certification, emergency lighting certification, extinguisher servicing, PAT and relevant staff training certificates. This will make certain that should a fire, happen all documents required by the Fire Service and insurance companies.

As soon as you close your office door for Christmas, I am sure the safety of your office may be far from your mind. And that is how it should be, as long as you have completed the above steps, the safety of your business should not be a cause for too much concern.

Before you leave your office in December, it is a good idea to get all of 2020’s fire safety checks booked in with your fire safety company. Especially, if you have works due in January- as this is a busy month! We are currently filling up with bookings for Fire Marshal with extinguisher training in January.
